Dear Friends,

30 December, 2012

We hope our Christmas letter finds you agreeing along with us that it was a good year (better than 2011 for us!). More travel, new experiences, time with friends, and good health. I do somewhat feel the poverty of source material relative to letters past. Our interests have been focused on bluegrass bands and motorcycles. A joy for those personally involved, but less compelling to a general audience. Well, we have to make the best of it.

Our big excursion this year was to the Wild West,  to Tombstone, Tucson, Sedona, Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, and returning through parts of Colorado. Originally planned as a motorcycle trip, we rode on four wheels, while waiting for Bettie to mend from her misadventure the previous fall.

We enjoyed Tombstone more than we expected. A touristy Western theme park it is, but if only half the stuff they tell about it is true, it is an amazing place.

Crystal Power
After Tombstone we rendezvoused with friends from Houston and mellowed out in Sedona, getting in touch with our inner New Age spirit. Sedona is Ground Zero of the New Age (or should that be the Old Age, it is soooo "twentieth century"). But where else can you buy a crystal, have your aura read, go off-roading in jeeps and ATVs, and pig out on cactus fries and flax-seed crust pizza?

The focus of the trip was the Grand Canyon including an excursion down to Phantom Ranch at the bottom. The trip was organized by a friend, a lady determined to walk down and back up the 4500 ft descent, for which our enthusiasm was muted; but we signed on after learning there was a mule ride option. Our friends hiked, and we rode, from the canyon rim down to the river. In the final analysis, both hikers and riders were challenged, though in different part of the anatomy. It was an experience of a life time (i.e. once was enough).

In July I joined friends, for several glorious days, and 3000 miles, of riding in southern Colorado and eastern Arizona. And then in September Bettie & I together made another excursion to Colorado, this time with better results than in 2011. We saw friends, had wonderful rides, and no mishaps.

We had one very sorrowful loss this year, a dear friend from college, William Whalen. We were able to attend his services in Boston, and I had the sad honor of saying some words in remembrance.

Bettie enjoys performing bluegrass in Allen's Landing Band. With changes and additions in the membership the sound is better than ever. They usually play at Hickory Hollow at the end of every month, and  have a show at the Mucky Duck in January. Come see them if you get a chance.

There are more events, photos and videos, on our blog. http://tayaratravels.blogspot.com/  I post most of our activities on Facebook throughout the year. If you wish to receive exciting real time updates, rather than wait for the next annual installment, you are welcome to follow me at http://www.facebook.com/leigh4131 or Google Plus

Wishing you all the etc. etc. etc.,
Leigh & Bettie
