[April 1, Lisbon]
Sao Jorge castle

was built in the 8th century by the Moors, but then completely rebuilt by Salazar in the 20th century. It is not particularly attractive or impressive in itself,
but its prospect

is magnificent.
From its ramparts the traveler sees

all of Lisbon spread below.
The castle sits atop an old area called the Alfama, once the sailors' quarter, and before that, a Moorish town.
The streets

were intentionally made narrow and winding, to confuse and discourage unwelcome visitors from obtaining the castle.
The houses

today lack modern conveniences, and young people are abandoning the area for more comfortable situations, leaving
glimpses

of antique life for the vistor to enjoy.
