An unlucky deer

[April 10, Nazare]

IMGP3102 Nazare is a sea-side resort, a former fishing village but now devoted to gentle pleasuring.

IMGP3165 The lower town hugs the beach, while

IMGP3163 the upper town hangs precipitously hundreds of feet above.

There is a story of a nobleman out hunting, who rode unknowingly close to the edge of the high cliff in his eager pursuit of a deer. He was saved from death

IMGP3161 by the appearance of the Virgin Mary. He later erected a chapel in gratitude and memory of his divine rescue. The deer, however, lacking wherewithal for donative architecture, was allowed to perish.
